When searching for a definition for choppers I found a few different ways to define choppers. One was, "One that chops" another was "A helicopter". The definition found that MotoYard.com believes to be the most accurate definition available defines choppers as "A motorcycle, especially one that is customized." A couple of popular television shows available on cable and satelite television have documented the building process of choppers from conception to completion. On these documentaries the choppers built were not built weld by weld, piece by piece from a supply of unfabricated steel but rather mostly from used parts salvaged from defunct motorcycles or new parts purchased from motorcycle repair parts sellers. Some of the parts used to build the choppers on these documentaries were located and purchased from sellers who listed the parts on internet auction sites like MotoYard.com.
