Indian Motorcycle
|
Indian motorcycles were originally founded and manufactured in Springfield, Massachusetts under the name Hendee Manufacturing Company. Former bicycle racers George M. Hendee and Carl Oscar Hedström had been paired together to produce a 1.75 bhp motorcycle with a single cylinder engine. The two designed and built the first of a long history of Indian motorcycles. This first ever built of all Indian motorcycles was successful and sales increased over the following 10 years.

After a group of investors headed by Ralph B. Rogers purchased controlling interest of Indian motorcycles in 1945 operations were turned over to Rogers on November 1, 1945. After Rogers took over operations production of the Scout was discontinued and production of Indian motorcycles was limited by 1949. In 1953 the production of Indian motorcycles was stopped. In 1999 the Indian name was purchased by a company in Gilroy, CA that began manufacturing motorcycles under the Indian motorcycles trademark.
