Don't know about helmets, but roofs that use fiberglass do pretty good.
"The average lifespan of fiberglass roofing materials ranges between 15 and 20 years. Roofing made out of fiberglass requires very little maintenance".

And roofs are exposed to much more than your helmet. So this myth is "busted" :) You DON'T need to change your helmet every five years (as long as you don't break it)

Actually most helmets (at least the good ones) are not made out of plastic.
Arai uses "fiberglass-based construction...proprietary aerospace fiberglass technology to achieve a strong, flexible shell in a lightweight package."

Obviously fiberglass has a very, very, very long lifespan, probably longer than plastic.

I work with plastics as part of automobile collision repair. I notice that sun damage is a very real and rapid process. Keep your helmet out of the sun! Even if plastic will "last" hundreds of years it will become brittle long before it shows wear. The myths are probably put out to limit liability more than to sell helmets.

The rule of thumb is not to mix tires (brands or types), but in the case of 208 / 209 you might be able to make an exception. They are very similar tires.

But...
Is your safety worth $100? If so, then just buy another front tire. You can even find take offs (used) for under $50.

Just my two cents.

Yeah, but I wonder how many years or hundreds of years you need to have you helmet in the sun for it to deteriorate.

I doubt even 5 years in direct sunlight - if you live somewhere where you can ride in the sun 24 hours a day :) would even cause any damage.
One thing I heard is Arai recommends to change your helmet every 5 years. If anyone knows why please comment on this post...
Plastics deteriorate with exposure to sunlight and ozone. If you can keep a helmet out of the sunlight and away from ozone, it should last almost indefinately.
